Summer in Oslo: 3 urban beaches to cool down

18 Jul 2024 | Recreation, Summer

When the sun shines in Oslo, it is the perfect city where you can truly enjoy what summer has to offer. In this article we’ll show you where to cool down during a hot summer day in Oslo. Nothing feels more pleasant than taking a swim in the salty seawater when the weather is boiling. Oslo has plenty of beaches and places to go for a swim, and some of them are super central.

Literally next to Oslo Opera house you will find the newest city beach, Operastranda. It opened in 2021 right in the heart of Oslo’s newest district Bjørvika, which has been under constant development since the early 2000’s.

The beach is a 100 meters long sandy beach with a floating dock and a diving board. The beach is divided in two, where one part is shallow and the other has deeper water. On the hottest summer days, Operastranda is the perfect retreat to cool off a bit in the water. Or if you prefer otherwise, just lay down on the sand and get a tan.

A short walk from the Opera house, you’ll find Sørenga Sjøbad (Sørenga Sea Bath), which opened in 2015, and together with Operastranda they are two of Oslo’s most urban beaches. Sørenga sjøbad truly represents what summer in Oslo means to the locals.

There’s a grassy park area, a tiny sandy beach, a diving tower, outdoor showers, toilets, and plenty of seating on the 190 meter long pier.

Tjuvholmen bystrand is another urban beach and pier which is located right next to Aker Brygge. This area used to be part of the Oslo harbour, and contained mostly shipyards and engineering industry. But since the 1980’s Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen has been transformed into something very different, with apartments, restaurants, shops, mall, museum, hotels and a small beach and pier for swimming.
